General Information
Adoption Records
- For those records after 1964, Ohio statute provides that the record
of adoption proceedings may be inspected only upon the personal direction
of the probate judge. Further, such records are not available at any
time for inspection by the general public. See the Ohio Department of
Health, Office
of Vital Statistics fact sheet.
Bounty Land Warrant Records and General Land Office Records.-
Held by the National Archives.
Deed Records for Land Transactions.- Kept by the Recorder of
Deeds in each county.
Military Records- For all servicemen who enlisted from Ohio since
World War I
and all National Guardsmen (since 1903) are located in the Veterans' Affairs Division,
Office of the Adjutant General. Ohio did not grant state pensions. For U.S. Regular Army
officers, 1789-1917, and enlisted men, 1789-1912, the records
are kept by the National Archives. Later records are kept by
the National Personnel Record Center.
Passenger Lists.- The National
Archives holds original passenger lists.
Pension Records- Records from the Revolutionary War to 1916,
regardless of state of service, are kept by the National
Archives. After 1916, they are kept by the National Personnel Record Center.
