National Register of Historic Places, Listings in Ohio

Search this database of all Ohio listings in the National Register of Historic Places by one or more areas including: Property name, architectural style, city, county, historic use, current use, period or area of significance. The response will be a list of properties that meet your search criteria. Follow these examples and tips and remember: keep your search simple.

Example1: The David Smith House is listed within the database as "Smith, David, House". To find this property, enter the word "Smith" (without the quotes) in the name field. You will see a return of approximately 20 "Smith" entries. Click on "Smith, David, House," and you will see the information available for this property.

Example 2: Using the above example, and knowing that the David Smith House is within Summit county, try entering "Smith" (no quotes) in the name field and "Summit" in the county field. This will return records matching those two simple variables (currently there are three "Smith" properties within Summit County). From this short list, click on the "Smith, David, House" to see the information available on this property.

Example 3: To see all of the National Register Properties within a particular city, simply select that city from the "City Name:" window and select the "SEARCH" button. Once you have located the property you are looking for, click on the property name to view the available information.

Tips: The key to a successful search is to enter a minimum of information. The "less is more" principle holds true and means that the less information that you provide, the more records will be returned. Experiment with different fields. Each time you attempt a new search be sure your search windows are clear, or click on "NEW SEARCH". If you are searching by address, do not use "Street" or "Avenue" but simply enter "123 Main Street" as "123 Main".

The Ohio Historic Preservation Office nominates eligible properties to the National Register of Historic Places, our nation's official list of historic properties worthy of preservation. Properties listed on the National Register include districts, sites, buildings, structures, and objects significant in American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, and culture. The National Register is a program of the National Park Service, and is administered at the state level by the Ohio Historic Preservation Office.
